It was a real treat to produce this portrait of dollmaker Mimi Kirchner. While spending the better part of two days shooting in her attic studio, Mimi effortlessly went from one work in progress doll to another, adding wonderful details with imagination and precision. I own one of Mimi’s creations and I have to say it it’s one of the prettiest things in my home.
Above is stoner rock band Sleep’s video for Dragonaut from the album Holy Mountain. Definitely one of my all time favorite records. Check out those dreads on Matt Pike! You might recognize this tune from the film Gummo. And here you can see the album art for Sleep’s Dopesmoker and Jerusalem by my pal Arik Roper. Yeah…
Here’s the video for for Sonic Youth’s Sacred Trickster directed by my pal Tom Surgal. Tom is a multi-talented musician and filmmaker. He plays drums in the band White Out with Lin Culbertson and has played with a ton of other amazing musicians such as Sonic Youth, Samara Lubelski and Nels Cline. Tom has also directed a bunch of music videos for Sonic Youth and Pavement among others. His excellent music series at Club Midway called Red Dessert Nights has featured performances by PG Six, Sightings, NNCK, Spectre Folk & Jack Rose. I even got to dj for the Spectre Folk/Loren Mazzacane Connors show. Soooo good. This video is for Sonic Youth’s new album The Eternal on their new label Matador. Right on Tom.
My old pal and former Mass Art classmate Malcolm Felder, the talent behind the one man band Lineland, just completed a month long tour with partner in crime Animal Hospital. I was lucky enough to see Lineland live at Monkeytown in Brooklyn, NY. For the shows, Malcolm created six unique experimental music videos, which he projected and played along to. On all four walls, hypnotic visions of vintage cartoons, snippets of Bollywood films and 1950s appliance commercials danced in time with the music. The whole event was completely mesmerizing.
